Chapter 10

The New York Times was trying to figure out who Chris was. Jim Gallien reported to the trooper and the clues lead to Wayne Westerberg's home. Wayne did not know Chris had died, but when he heard the story on the radio, he gave the police Chris' security number. Authorities in Alaska contacted law-enforcement and contacted Sam McCandless who tole the authorities that their parents had moced to Maryland. Sam and his wife drove up to Maryland to inform their parents that Chris was dead.

Chapter 11

Chris' parents live in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland with pictures that showed how Chris grew up. His father, Samuel Walter McCandless was in the advanced technology field called synthetic aperture radar (SAR).He had a famous temper and had such authority in his voice that most people would automatically listen to him. However after Chris left for his jouney, he became more tolerent and somewhat gentile. He and his ex-wife had five chilren altogether but eventually split apart after Chri's father fell fo rthe secretay at Hughes Aircraft. Walt and Billie worked for many hours at their new firm and never had enough time for Chris and Carrine. They also became angry at one another, threatening divorce. However for the weekends and when school was out, Chris would go camping with the family. Chris and Bille's father were also very similar to each other. They both liked to be by themselves and Loren Johnson (Billie's grandfather) hated killing animals, but he had to to make a living and to feed his family. Chris, when he was in high school was always a deep thinker. He would spend his Friday nights buying hamlpburgers and give them out to bums on the street. Anpther fact about Chris was that he usually excelled in all activies, but he was to subborn to fix any flaws. He also hated to be beaten by anyone, especially his younger sister. When Chris was the captain on the cross country team, he had invented a workout called Road Warriors. He would try to get his team lost on purpose, but they would always find a familiar road to run back home again. Even though he said he didn't like money, he always had the best ways to make money even when he was young. Even the company he worked for wanted Chris is stay in Annandale and offered to pay for his college education, but Chris refused and ended up going to Emory.

Chapter 12

When Chris graduated high school, he bought his father an expensive telescope for his birthday. He gave a heart throbbing speech and his parents let him go in his trip after he graduated. When he came back, he had lost 30 lbs and almost died of dehydration in the Mojave Desert. He attened Emory and actually took his gun and hunting knife with him. His roommate ended up dropping out and Chris made it on the dean's list. He worked for his ftaher during summer, but he became more cold and sarcastic towards everyone. Chris had found out the truth about his father while he was on his trip. His father had lived in two relationships in secret. Walt's double life was caught when he and his ex-wife had another child named Quinn McCandless and both families were hurt. When Chris found out, he kept the secret to himself and did not tell anyone and had anger towards his father. It was ironic because the books he read,the authors, London and Tolstoy, cheated on their wifes, had many other mistresses, and even drink and beat his girlfriends, he forgave and or overlooked them. After Chris graduated from Emory, he left without a word to his parents and even Carine, who he loved and cherished the most. It was over two years and his mother never left the house without posting a note on the front door, and never passed a hitchhiker that looked like Chris.

Chapter 13

This chapter was in Carine's memory about Chris and how she found out he died. Carine is energetic and self-assured, a high achiever and quick to sate an opinion, like Chris. She also fought with her parents but after Chris disappeared, she recalled that her relationship with her parents had gotten better. She married Chris Fish, and works at a 14 hour day at C.A.R. Services, Incoroporated. The day she found out about her brother's death was when her husband had come home early. She was crying so loudly, Fish was worried that his neighbors might think that he was hurting her. She was hysterical and finally drope up to her parent's house. She even stopped and prayed. Carine and Sam flew to Fairbanks to bring Chris' remains. She held his ashes the entire plane ride back and was momentarily angry that the box had misspelled his middle name. Over the next few weeks, she and her family had suffered weight loss while her father had gained.

Chapter 14

Jon Krakauer was similar to Chris. He wanted to climb a montain called Devils Thumb. He was 23 years old when he attempted. He quit his job and headed out for the mountain. He met Kai Sandburn and ate and spent the night at her house. He realized that he had missed company. When Jon began his climb, he brought aluminum crutain rods and it helped him from falling into the glacier's crevasses. Three days after he left Petersburg, he almost fell in the crevasses during a snow storm and Jon finally pitched a tent later that night. The pilot who was to drop his supplies came four days late due to the snow storm and left Krakauer anxious. He had no way to communicate with the outside worldd. The pilot dropped off the suopples after Jon fantically waved his sleeping bad and he felt abandoned, lost and vunerable. The next day, Krakauer climbed the glacier, relying on self-control. After going up 700 ft, he kept striking rock and finally, worked his way back down. He realized his climb was over and the only other way was to go down.
